From the 101s, we now go into detailing. Next week, we begin with a class on Character Work with Jo Kukathas.

Building on Acting 101, Jo Kukathas will share how she shapes and teases out nuanced and coloured characterisations from her actors while refining each participant’s approach to directing actors.
For this session, participants will be studying Alfian Sa’at’s Nadirah which Jo has directed 3 times!

About the instructor:
Jo Kukathas is an actor, writer, dramaturg and director and co-founder/ Artistic Director of The Instant Café Theatre Company, Malaysia (1989) best known for its political satire, its FIRSTWoRKS new play program and theatre reflecting Malaysia’s diverse ethnic, linguistic, religious, migratory composition. She has run arts spaces, produced/curated festivals, staged productions and toured and/or worked in Singapore, Brazil, Taiwan, Japan, Australia and Indonesia. She believes in the need for a more egalitarian, empathetic society. She is an API Fellow (Asian Public Intellectual) and DDS Fellow (De La Salle Democracy Discourse) and also YBeeee, the fictional Deputy Minister of Moral Panic.

Tunjuk Arah/ இயக்குனர் is a developmental programme for directors of Malay and Tamil theatre. It opens the space for them to reflect on their practice and grow, be groomed by various local and regional directors, and enjoy a structured learning environment. Participants will practice directing engaging and affective works for Malay and Tamil theatre, apply good directorial strategies and grow their confidence in developing and maturing their directorial identity.
As part of the programme, selected masterclasses, workshops and sharing sessions will be opened to all.
The masterclasses and sharing sessions of Tunjuk Arah/ இயக்குனர் from Dec 2021 – Feb 2022 are supported by the National Arts Council.
