Mandela Mile Live Stream

On 18 July 2018, Kofi Annan led The Elders Walk Together through Johannesburg honouring the centenary birthdate of Nelson Mandela. In solidarity, Westminster UNA inaugurated the ‘Mandela Mile’ in which Londoners walked from Nelson Mandela’s statue in Parliament Square to his bust at the Royal Festival Hall. Yes, it’s exactly a mile! The idea was quickly picked up in cities in several countries.
In 2019, the initiative expanded, linking those walking their own Mandela Miles in Accra, Bali, Beijing, Caux, Dakar, Lagos, Luton, New York, Oslo, Popayan, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Soweto, New York and in Virginia, USA. An all-day Livestream brought together those working for Nelson Mandela’s core values in many countries.
Following the sudden death of Kofi Annan shortly after the original walk in Johannesburg, it was agreed that the annual Mandela Mile would become an observance and global leadership challenge running between 8 April (Kofi Annan’s birthdate) and 18 July (Nelson Mandela’s birthdate). Kofi Annan believed that ‘every journey starts with a single step and that by walking together the world could learn to work together to overcome the shared challenges we face’.
In 2020, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, we will be hosting a virtual Mandela Mile 24-hour live stream and Step Up party! It’s free.
