Han Kang’s novel “Human Act,” also known as “The Boy is Coming” in Korean, revolves around one of the most significant events in Korea’s modern history – the 1980 Gwangju Uprising in which citizens of the city of Gwangju launched widespread pro-democracy protests.

Director Yosup Bae of Performance Group TUIDA, adapted Han Kang’s stirring novel into Human Fuga and this is a documentary film, that captures the process of performing Human Fuga.

In order to create this performance based on the text of Han Kang’s novel “Human Acts”, participating artists had to go through the process of visiting the places of the 18 May Gwangju People’s Uprising, to meet survivors and engrave the remaining records on their bodies.

The discussion and various attempts that the actors shared during transferring the testimonies of pain, which the actors wrote down with their bodies for two years, into stage language are recorded in this film.

Part of the performance was filmed at the now ruined Gwangju Armed Forces Hospital. This film might be able to soothe your regret of not being at the moment of the performance even though you can feel the resonance of the moment.

About Performance Group Tuida
