Suburban shared paths are not to be ignored. They are easy to ride and provide the opportunity for scenes best seen from the seat of a recumbent trike. There is no need to ride fast when there is so much to see. Almost every house in Highfields East is different from the others. The rural past peeks through for those who look. The gardens, the greenery are impressive.
0:01 We will start and end at Peacehaven Botanic Park
0:13 It Looks like a hot-rod get together. The core vehicles are over 70 years old, so must be supply issues.
0:48 It is easy to imagine all of the original Highfields residences as botanical gardens.
1:20 Trees overhanging the path
1:39 Highfields is a place of many pets – so many vets.
1:54 It is unusual to see a graveyard close to a church in Australia, no matter a suburban area. The church was here first.
2:11 Approaching Highfields road.
2:56 A lot of rain means a lot of mowing. Ride-on mowers are popular where most lots are 3/4 of an acre or more.
3:17 I have been told that this is the original Highfields homestead, although I may have misunderstood.
3:40 This is now the primary services area for Highfields – Woolworths and Aldis plus many specialties.
3:49 Ahead to the left is the community centre, pool and sports facilities – all hidden by new library construction.
4:11 Fire is always a concern in a dry country with so much flora.
4:34 Houses to the left of me, trees to the right –
Here I am living in perfection with you.
5:03 This part of Highfields was hit by hail a few days ago. No damage except to foliage.
5:38 This is a second and older shopping precinct around a Coles.
6:04 For the sake of consistency, I try to stick to paths. There is one, but I forgot and took my usual route.
6:38 This is the steepest part of the ride.
I had trouble until I converted to mountain bike gears.
6:53 We are approaching the New England Highway.
7:15 Invisible from the road is the Highfields Village Green – a beautiful green space with views over the Great Divide.
7:35 This is Highfields Road again to our right.
8:18 This is the third servo we have passed on the highway – and the fourth we have seen this ride – and we don’t need any of them.
8:26 We are now on Cawdor road heading west.
8:47 Davidson park is to the right of the white gates, the entrance to the original Davidson house, now a B&B.
9:14 Back on Kuhls Road. Stan Kuhl donated the land for Peacehaven.
9:34 We are approaching Peacehaven Park again.
Back to where we once began. Lunch in the park, anyone?
