A prominent figure of the international dramatic art vanguard, Theodoros Terzopoulos, is one of the greatest names in today’s world theater firmament. “Dionysus, the Return” dives into this singular artist’s past to showcase how he climbed up the ladder of universal recognition. It was 1986 when Theodoros Terzopoulos shook the theatrical landscape with his radically groundbreaking production of the Bacchae.
The huge success of the performance in festivals around the world, the absolute physicality of the performance and the scenic idiom that was created led to the creation of his theater company ATTIS.
Dionysus, the God of Destruction and Rebirth, was always a great inspiration for the director, both an artistic impulse and a form-creating force.
35 years later, Terzopoulos having staged more than 2000 performances throughout the world (from Beijing and Taiwan to New York and Colombia) at leading international theatre festivals and with ongoing invitations and collaborations in Russia, China, the US, is hailed by international theater critics as one of the most significant European directors, a distinguished member of the avant-guard in world theatre.
The film follows Terzopoulos as he takes us on a global journey that begins in the village of Makrygialos where he was born, the fourth son of a Greek immigrant from the Black Sea, to the Berliner Ensemble in Berlin, to Russia, China, the US, to his theater base in Athens, to, finally, Delphi where it all begun 35 years ago.
