This short film analyzes how charismatic Internet personalities are able to use para-social relationships to manipulate their audiences for profit. The increased popularity and usage of the internet as the primary source of information and entertainment brings with it an increase in the propagation of misinformation. The internet has many benefits, namely the quick and democratic spread of information, but there are many dangers that come with this. Because information spreads quickly on the internet, checking the accuracy of the information is very difficult, making it the perfect avenue for bad actors to intentionally spread lies for financial gain. Nothing shows how harmful misinformation can be quite like the misinformation surrounding Covid-19, when confidence in the government and public health measures are key to society being able to work together to overcome the dangers of this deadly pandemic.
