THE SPORTS BUZZ ON THE AIR talks to Meridian volleyball first year head coach Lyndsie Schur along with Lady Jackets Eve Dirkse and Abby Edwards after the Class 1A Meridian Lady Jackets swept the Kopperl Lady Eagles in straight sets, 25-20, 25-19, 25-20, on the road in their District 18-1A opener last Friday in THE SPORTS BUZZ Game Of The Week.
After losing 17 consecutive non-district matchups, the Lady Jackets (1-0 in district, 1-17 overall) posted their first win of the season when they needed it most. Sophomore Journey Stauffer led the Lady Jackets with eight kills, followed by junior Eve Dirkse with six and junior Hope Cabrera with four. Junior Canyon Stauffer dished out a team-high 12 assists, while sophomore Mariana Paniagua delivered seven service aces and eight assists, while senior Abby Edwards smashed four service aces against the Lady Eagles (0-1, 0-11).
As a young and inexperienced squad in the re-established volleyball program entering its third district season, the Lady Jackets will host back-to-back home matches beginning with pre-season favorite Blum (1-0, 18-12) at 6 p.m. Friday.
