Almost Home

For the first week’s topic, we are going to show “Almost Home” a work by Rebecca Tsai.
This work is a documentary about a family’s traditional architecture residence that is about to be demolished. The owner of the house, as well as the protagonist in this film, Sunny Lai, is a 65-year-old man who has been working in China for over 30 years. While spending most of his time in China, he still devotes himself to protecting and reestablishing his home in Taiwan. The relationship between China and Taiwan has always been ambiguous. As a Taiwanese businessman who works in China and maintains a close relationship with China, Sunny admires the fast economic growth and much more profitable opportunities in China. Then why not just be Chinese? Since the time he spends in China is much more than in Taiwan. Toward this kind of question, Sunny’s attitude has always been firm and has insisted himself as a Taiwanese. But why can’t he just go home? Because all of his effort and business are in China. To him, it is not the time to go back to the so-called home, because only by staying in China would he have a chance to achieve his accomplishment. The struggle of being away or staying has constantly impacted him, and the conflict is even more fierce on his next generation. His home is in Taiwan, and the house he has lived in since he was born is his root. The consciousness of Taiwanese nationalism is shaking and disappearing in this capitalistic world, so as the house.
