Red, Blue and White – I ran out of American Time
| 2020 | 20 mins
For the first week topic: , we are going to showing “Red, Blue and White – I ran out of American Time” a work by Yao-YI Wang. It is a combination of events that happened from past to present. The story seems composed by loose structure, but each event is also closely related to one and another.
-My grandmother worked in the US military club in Tainan, Taiwan during the Vietnam War. She became the first batch of Taiwanese who accepted American culture at that time.
-In 1969, outside the Democratic National Convention that was held in Chicago, Military and police riot controlled the anti-war protest violently.
-In 2017, I moved to Chicago, the USA for education and work. I felt the same cultural shock that my grandmother had received at the time.
Through the experience of being abroad, the artist deconstructs his identity and uses the repetitiveness of family history as a metaphor to unfold the entire history. What is project is trying to depict is the relationship that was generated under the military confrontation during the Cold War period, and the extended reorganization of international relations between Asia and the United States caused the massive migration and the confusion of self-identification. Until today, we are still suffering from this consequence.
