《島嶼星圖 Star Maps of Island 》Lighting Installation, 2021

In the beginning, people looked up at the stars and wondered if distant sparks had mysterious powers that, like a…

In the beginning, people looked up at the stars and wondered if distant sparks had mysterious powers that, like a bonfire at our feet, could dispel darkness and fear for us. So we held hands around the fire, singing song after song and weaving tales of reverence for heaven and earth.

It is a “memorandum of human civilization” that begins an imaginary path with the classic phrase, “Once upon a time….” You will read page after page of poetry filled with love and life and discover how the world works and even the roots of human existence.

It is a common asset of civilization, regardless of color or race. We are a people raised on stories.

*Star Maps of the Island* takes the concept of “starry sky”, bringing together diverse ethnic cultures through the image of stars. The multidisciplinary collaboration art project brings together the installation art team (WHYIXD), new immigrants (Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia), and illustrators (Yashin, Chou Yi, Fisheeptung, Little Oil Art), musicians (Hsieh Hsien-Te, Huang Jin-Wei, Tai Moon-In) and motion designer (Howard Yang).

The works are based on the legends and fairy tales of the seven countries where the new immigrants come from. The interpretations of creators in different fields, as well as the diversity of cultures and world views, produce rich results. Illustrators use vivid blocks of color and lines to depict imaginary images that are different from those conveyed by words. Through rhythms, melodies and instruments, musicians present exotic tunes with narration of new immigrants. The work is finally integrated into a physical lighting installation, where the visitors can instantly browse the exhibition website, watch the exquisite illustrations and stories, and experience a mysterious story in a physical and intuitive way offline. The visitor can take this opportunity to step into foreign countries and listen to the different but equally wonderful cultures of this land.

In addition, the work is located in Dongda Park, Hsinchu, the former Air Force’s secret reconnaissance unit “Black Bat Squadron” camp. In the past, the base was a guide for pilots to return home; now, it is a new home for many recent immigrants to take root and be a part of. *Star Maps of the Island* thus becomes a medium for “gazing into the past” and “connecting to the present”. In addition to conveying the multicultural characteristics of the new immigrants, it also responds to the historical context and significance of the scene with the time-limited and location-limited “landscape art”, showing the historical memory hidden in the gap of time.
